Don’t catalogue people! KidLitCripCrit

A photo by Richard Cave for the Oxford Mail of James playing amputee football - he's just kicked the ball directly at the camera and looks very intense. James is a one-legged white man, then in his 30s. He's using black crutches. Our text reads: '"What happened to you?" disability & sport' on a cream paper background.

On the Channel 4 Paralympics trailers – it’s complicated

a 2020 photo of me, a white 40ish mother with long brown hair, sitting in my wheelchair with my then 1yo daughter on my lap. We're wearing green linen. I'm looking off to the side and smiling. Text on a cream paper background reads: "The most damaging stereotype?

Sickness and Lies? | The BBC and a very damaging stereotype

A mirror selfie. I'm a white woman wearing a brown cotton hair scarf, holding a camera and looking into the lens smiling. The words "disability pride..." are written at the top with a cream torn paper background. The mirror frame is very old and cracked, and is cream, though it looks mysteriously pinkish here.

Disability – tropes in children’s picture books | Some thoughts for teachers

A photo of Lucy, James, Mainie & Viola outside in Jericho. Lucy's a wheelchair user, and you can't actually see that James has one leg here - but he has. Viola is a baby and asleep. All subsequent images use the same photo as background, just the text changes. Our text reads: 'Disability in a kids' book? Unsure about it? Imagine reading it to a disabled child. Would it feel right? If not, that's your answer.'
